چکیده

In this paper we attempt to understand how policy interventions could improve the fuel economy of drivers without changing the vehicles they drive or the trips they take. To do this, we use high-resolution driving data to document the large variation in actual on-road fuel economy achieved by drivers of identical vehicles. We analyze this variation using a model that links driver behavior to vehicle fuel consumption. The physical vehicle model, estimated econometrically from data on acceleration and speed choices, predicts observed fuel consumption extremely well. We combine this physical model with a model of optimizing behavior by drivers, in which drivers tradeoff higher fuel consumption for shorter trip times. Using the variation in value of time for the drivers in our data set, we simulate route choice and driving behavior on a stylized set of trips. We find that drivers have little incentive to change their driving behavior to improve fuel economy, since the time cost of driving more efficiently generally outweighs the value of fuel savings. This means that gasoline taxes, while internalizing environmental externalities, are not as effective at reducing overall fuel use as policies that allow for smoother traffic flow (fewer accelerations and decelerations) such as stoplight timing, infrastructure improvements, or the increased use of vehicle automation. ∗Department of Economics, University of Arizona. Comparison of Hybrid Fuel Cell Vehicle Technology and Fuel Efficiency

Hybridization of fuel cells with additional batteries or ultracapacitors in a fuel cell vehicle reduces electrical and mechanical stresses on fuel cells and improves the overall drive train efficiency over a standard drive cycle. This paper primarily analyzes hybrid fuel cell vehicles with different drive train arrangements, and compares projected fuel economies of hybrid fuel cell vehicles wit...

Fuel Economy Sensitivity to Vehicle Mass for Advanced Vehicle Powertrains

In 2002, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) launched FreedomCAR, which is a partnership with automakers to advance high-technology research needed to produce practical, affordable advanced vehicles that have the potential to significantly improve fuel economy in the near-term. Advanced materials (including metals, polymers, composites, and intermetallic compounds) can play an important role in...

Are Fuel Economy Standards Regressive?

Despite widespread agreement that a carbon tax would be more efficient, many countries use fuel economy standards to reduce transportation-related carbon dioxide emissions. We pair a simple model of the automakers’ profit maximization problem with unusually-rich nationally representative data on vehicle registrations to estimate the distributional impact of U.S. fuel economy standards. The key ...

Prospects on Fuel Economy Improvements for Hydrogen Powered Vehicles

Fuel cell vehicles are the subject of extensive research and development because of their potential for high efficiency and low emissions. Because fuel cell vehicles remain expensive and the demand for hydrogen is therefore limited, very few fueling stations are being built. To try to accelerate the development of a hydrogen economy, some original equipment manufacturers (OEM) in the automotive...

Improving Fuel Efficiency of Commercial Vehicles through Optimal Control of Energy Buffers

Fuel consumption reduction is one of the main challenges in the automotive industry due to its economical and environmental impacts as well as legal regulations. While fuel consumption reduction is important for all vehicles, it has larger benefits for commercial ones due to their long operational times and much higher fuel consumption. Optimal control of multiple energy buffers within the vehi...
